Making It Work: BOLD Scratches is a scratch call out for something weird, something new and something different.
Halfpace Theatre and Ensemble Not Found are on the lookout for non-conventional shows that don’t fit into traditional scripted scratch nights. From devised pieces to performance art to site-responsive work, we want to see all the wild ideas you haven’t found a platform for yet.
We will showcase 6 pieces at a scratch night on 17 January 2025 (7pm) at BOLD Elephant. We will offer at least 4 hours of free rehearsal space (likely more) on the week of 13-17 January alongside a £100 bursary and post-scratch mentorship for each piece.
You can apply as a group with an existing idea OR as an individual artist looking to get put into a ‘working group’ to devise a piece during the week. Let us know what you’re interested in exploring and a bit about who you are and we may be able to match you up with fellow artists to create something brand new.
You’ll be working and performing at the Undercroft space of BOLD Elephant, an unconventional performing space (not a black box studio). We especially welcome projects that want to explore space creatively and utilise non-traditional performance spaces. Please note this also means projects will be low-tech, relying mainly on practical elements with limited technical support.
Apply now until 6 December 2024 at 23.59PM. We want things that are raw, unfinished, urgent and unexpected - and the application form is intentionally small so we can focus on pieces that are at the very beginning of their creative journey!
BOLD Scratches is a scratch night dedicated to early stage, non-conventional work. Please note we are unlikely to programme scripted pieces or work that has received a significant amount of support and/or development opportunities already.
Making It Work is an initiative aiming at building support networks with and for new migrant artists in the UK. It was started in 2023 by Ensemble Not Found and Halfpace Theatre, two migrant-led theatre companies based in the UK. Making It Work encourages migrant work in the UK by providing free and low cost workshops, mentorship, community-building events, scratch nights and showcases for migrant work. Most importantly, Making It Work is about envisioning a space in which new migrant artists in the UK feel supported and seen.
We have so far received support from various organizations such as Arts Council England, Applecart Arts, The Space and BOLD Elephant. This round of Making It Work is possible thanks to BOLD Elephant and support from Arts Council England.
