"I have to start again...from the ground up. Cobble together a new kind of church...."
When a religious sister is confronted with the reality that she is queer, she sets out to examine her previous belief systems, the conflict within herself, and what she needs to do next. What results is a new kind of church, with a newfound community, rooted in rebellion against the harmful beliefs that once kept her restrained.
Part confessional theatre, part participatory theatre, Makeshift (A Queer Mass) is a strikingly relevant piece which confronts the relationship between queerness and religion, past trauma and new beginnings, and activism and performance - and how, when we fight not only for ourselves but for all those who have been left on the fringes, there is boundless joy to be shared.
