Hi everyone,

state of the [art] is looking to meet performers for How to Build the City, a large-scale participatory performance project taking place between late August and late September 2026.

We’re hosting a full-day casting workshop during the week commencing Monday 1 June 2026, from 10am–6pm. The exact date and location will be confirmed by Monday 18 May.

This is not a traditional audition: no monologue or prepared material needed. The day will involve games, movement, devising tasks, improvisation, audience interaction and public-space exercises.

We’re looking for performers in the broadest sense: people who can devise, move, improvise, host, play, respond, work with audiences, collaborate in an ensemble and hold space safely.

The dream energy is somewhere between Pina Bausch’s emotional body, Gob Squad’s social nerve, Coney’s game brain, Punchdrunk’s world-building presence, Forced Entertainment’s appetite for chaos, and a cabaret host’s ability to keep the room alive.

Selected performers will be invited into paid rehearsals and performances. Final roles will be paid between £1,000–£1,500, depending on the role, schedule and number of contracted days.

The casting workshop itself is unpaid, but lunch will be provided and reasonable travel reimbursed within an agreed cap.

Applications will be screened and limited places offered due to space/time, and so we can meet everyone fairly.
