Join YA-TA Collective on Tuesday 15 September at 7pm for a Facebook Live with Takatsuna (Taka) Mukai, co-director of our new theatre work We Are All Fish.

We Are All Fish is a new interdisciplinary theatre piece about loneliness, belonging, communication and the strange ways people try to reach one another when they appear to be living in completely separate worlds.

The play begins with three characters who do not know that the others exist.

Vera has spent six years maintaining a mysterious mechanical system in a world where gravity no longer behaves normally. She believes that by keeping the mechanism moving, somewhere two strangers will eventually meet.

In another world, Neko-chan lives inside a fragile Mediterranean landscape made through paper, collage and projection.

Elsewhere, Neko-kun has withdrawn into an abandoned bathhouse and an RPG world, communicating through games while becoming increasingly disconnected from the physical world around him.

At first, these three spaces exist independently. Gradually, their boundaries begin to break down and the characters discover that their worlds may be connected in ways they do not understand.

The production is being created through live performance, physical theatre, movement, original sound, video projection, object theatre, mechanical stage design, paper and origami work, puppetry and stop-motion animation.

Rather than building one realistic stage environment, we are creating three different visual languages which slowly begin to contaminate and transform one another as the characters move closer together.

During the Live, Taka will talk about the ideas behind the project, how our collaboration began, the development of the characters and worlds, and how we are combining theatre, sound, animation, objects and physical performance to make the piece.

We’ll also talk about the questions underneath the work — isolation, connection, quantum mechanics, multiple possible worlds, and whether meeting another person can change the shape of the world you live in.
